CHRIS Harris had a key role to play in Glasgow's Cab Direct Championship title-winning team this year – and will be looking for more of the same in 2024. In this week's magazine, he pays tribute to the Tigers' owners: "Winning this year was great, and especially for a club as big as Glasgow. After all the hard work and money spent by the Facennas, they deserved it. I know a lot of people moan and say they are a wealthy club, but we want wealthy clubs in the sport. We don't want to go to mucky stadiums all the time; we want nice stadiums in the league like Glasgow and Poole. Other clubs should aspire to their level. I know not all promoters have the money the Facennas have – we have to appreciate that, but they also work hard. They don't waste money on things. I have ridden there now for a long time, and they do things by the book. They do things fairly and pay what the riders' going rates are."

ITALIAN star Paco Castagna is targeting the next move of his career – and that means establishing himself in the Premiership. First of all, though, he needs a top flight club to offer an opportunity! In this week's magazine, he says: "When I guested in the top league last season, I felt I took my chances with both hands. The Wolverhampton and Belle Vue meetings, I showed I am capable of scoring good points in the Premiership. If nobody wants to give me faith, then I will have to earn it again. I'm going to give my full effort in the Championship. I will perform and then when the 'phone rings I will decide what is the best move for me for the Premiership. I fully understand that speedway can be a numbers game. The other side it's also a faith game. You need to give riders faith and a platform to perform. I'm going to train like a maniac to get my chance."

DAN Gilkes has endured something of a turbulent journey so far in his bid to succeed as a top-flight speedway rider, overcoming a string of injury setbacks to earn a team place in the Premiership with Sheffield. In this week's magazine, the British prospect reveals his battle to get to the top: "I had moved up to the Premiership and spent a full season in the main body of the side at Plymouth. I knew it would be tough and there were a few challenges mentally during the season that you don't know are coming until you face those situations. I felt like I dealt with it well. We had a few tough meetings but at the same time we had many good meetings. When you are riding at the Premiership level, you are coming up against some world-class riders. The level is very hard. I did really enjoy this year. It was a massive jump up."

BRITISH talent Sam Hagon has landed a plum reserve berth with top Championship club Poole – and he won't be lacking for people to turn to for advice. Hailing from the famous racing family that includes granddad Alf and dad Martin, as well as mum Charlotte's brother Martin Dugard, the youngster believes he is heading in the right direction. In this week's edition, he reveals: "I think it's a benefit of having a good pedigree. I've had Martin Dugard working with me for the last year and a half. He was such a good speedway rider and it's helped me make such a big step up. Martin was a Grand Prix winner at Coventry. He's been under pressure and had the injuries, so he knows the sport inside out and what I need to do in situations. I think people do expect maybe a bit more out of me because of my dad and granddad. I do prefer it and enjoy it when someone actually underestimates me."

TALENTED Brit Jordan Palin has admitted that his racing career is at an end, halted in its tracks by a serious crash in a Team GB training day at Belle Vue's National Speedway Stadium in July, 2022. A bleed on the brain left the teenager facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines but now he has revealed that he will not be returning. In this week's magazine, Palin tells Phil Lanning: "It's just a dangerous sport. It could have happened if I was practising on my own or racing. It's just one of those things and you have to accept it. Every time you get on a bike, you know you can have a life-changing incident or you can come out feeling like you're on top of the world. I look back now and I don't regret anything. I loved it while I was doing it. Speedway was great to me but I have moved on now."

But the former GP star is keen to get his career back on an upwards trajectory next summer and reveals: "I did have the back injury at the start of the year and that went again. GERMAN star Martin Smolinski thought his career might be at an end after undergoing hip replacement surgery – but how wrong he was! A second World Longtrack title scotched any lingering doubts and in this week's magazine, he talks about his return to racing. "I didn't know if I could compete at the same level after my hip surgery. I didn't know if I would be fast enough. Could I still do it? Would I be scared going into the corner? It was all the mental things to do with the brain, you know. It's a seven-hour drive from here, so on the way we discussed what we would do. We didn't know how quick I'd be, so we decided that if I was not leading, or I couldn’t compete at the front anymore, if I was struggling at the back, I would quit my career, retire, because I am not there to follow, I am there to win."

THE heartbreaking closure of speedway at Monmore Green has badly affected everyone connected with Wolverhampton, particularly the likes of long-time promoter Chris Van Straaten. In this week's edition, CVS reflects on the demise of the Wolves – and ponders what may come next. "It quickly turned out that Peter's promoting company was going into liquidation and a creditors' meeting was called at an accountancy firm in Worcester. It was at that creditors' meeting that I first met Tony Mole. We got on really well and got talking during that day and we decided we would buy whatever was left from the Receiver. I forget what we paid for everything. The only rider was Jan Stæchmann, everyone else had been on loan. Sam Ermolenko's contract was owned by the Speedway Control Board and we paid £6,000 to buy Sam's contract, although we wondered if he was going to do more than one season...that's the best six grand I've ever spent in my life as he went on to ride for me and Wolverhampton for another 14 or 15 years."

GRAND Prix star Dan Bewley has already been under the surgeon's knife since the end of the season to remove metalwork from his left leg, a legacy of the dreadful crash at Workington in 2018 that left him wheelchair-bound for a few months. The Cumbrian admits it has been playing on his mind a little and in this week's magazine, he reveals: "To be honest, the biggest thing was that if I had a crash and broke my leg again, that would have been me completely finished. It's not an ideal thing. The real trouble was that the rod was inside the bone, if I had broken it or bent it at all, I could have even ended up having my leg chopped off to try and fix it. I tried not to think about it, I blocked it out so it didn't cross my mind. It wasn't until I had a few crashes this year, that did make me want to get it out as soon as possible."
