MAX Fricke has only just been crowned Australian Champion – and now he's preparing to defend his title already! Leicester's new signing lifted the trophy for the delayed 2021-22 championship at Gillman on December 10, but this year's four-round series gets underway at the same venue next week. In this week's magazine, Fricke reveals: "We have a lot of really good riders from Australia competing on the world stage at the moment, and everyone has come home to do this. It's not going to make this Australian Championship easy at all. The boys I am up against are extremely capable and will want to take that Australian Championship off me. But at the same time, we are there to have fun. It's nice for all of us to race with our families behind us – everyone gets a rare chance to watch us live."

FORMER World Champion Jason Doyle has been something of a stranger in his homeland since he scaled the sport's ultimate height five years ago – but this winter, Ipswich's Australian ace is gearing himself up for a crack at his national title once again. In this week's magazine, he tells us: "I went back after I won the World Championship in Melbourne and did a couple of meetings then, but I haven't ridden in the Aussie titles for a few years. I am looking forward to getting back on the bike there. I think this is my final crack at riding in Australia. I am getting to that point in my career where I need to have the off-season off and not ride bikes. It costs a lot of money to bring bikes back. I have sent two bikes back and engines, ready for a good crack at the Australian title."

WORLD No. 6 Dan Bewley will be back in Britain next summer after Belle Vue confirmed his return to the National Speedway Stadium to spearhead the Aces' SGB Premiership title defence. In this week's magazine, the Cumbrian reflects on his meteoric rise up the Grand Prix rankings in 2022 with two round victories – and also a horrifying high-speed crash at Wroclaw in July which could easily have had far more serious consequences. "The way I kind of looked at it when I crashed was, when I was in the hospital, I thought, 'that was pretty big'. But I survived it. It kind of gives you a lot more confidence with what you can go through in a sense. It sounds a bit psycho saying it but you feel like, 'I can take that sort of crash, I can push it a bit harder if I need to'."

THE biggest surprise of the winter so far has been the shock return to British racing of Rory Schlein, only 12 months after the Australian star called time on his long stint in this country and headed home with his family to begin a new chapter in their lives Down Under. But the former British Champion will be back in 2023 in the colours of Wolverhampton and Berwick and in this week's magazine, he reveals: "The transition over the last 12 to 24 months has been pretty hectic and taxing. Anyone who has ever bought a house, moved into a house or moved cities will know it is stressful. Racing again was about finding some normality. I went and had a practice at Mildura and the bug was still there. I made some phone calls and here we are now."

WAS there a busier rider in Britain this year than Jason Edwards? The up-and-coming Brit reckons he packed close to 100 meetings into a hectic calendar involving fixtures in all three leagues for King's Lynn, Redcar and Mildenhall, as well as the occasional foray into Poland. In this week's magazine, he reveals: "Mum's my chief accountant; the more meetings you do the more organised you have to be to make sure you get paid, you can start losing track of who has paid and who hasn't. My mum was an amazing help, she came to a lot of meetings to help with the driving because Dad has been building a new house. I don't know how people like Richard Lawson do it, it always seems like they are on their own doing everything. I couldn't have done it without my mum, we split the driving. At times, it probably was too much but I never want to turn anything down and think I might not get asked the next time."

UNSUNG hero Connor Mountain is arguably one of Britain's most under-rated riders – but he appeared in both of this year’s Grand Finals in the top two divisions. The son of ex-King's Lynn and Mildenhall rider Andy Mountain, Connor reveals in this week's magazine: "I'd never seen Dad ride, he finished in 1993 and I wasn't born till '97 but I have bought a few videos this year, DVDs to see him. When I was a young kid, he had a few videos over and over but I don't know what happened to them so I bought some from Jan Stæchmann. I did two years on the 250 racing and I went on a 500 in 2013 and I remember a Southern Track Riders' meeting at King's Lynn. He was on gate four and I was on gate three and I elbowed him going into the first turn, that was the first red-letter day of my career. I think he was pleased but obviously Dad still goes on about it and now he says I was cheating because I elbowed him."

ONE rider hoping to make a fresh start in the British league next year is American ace Gino Manzares. In this week's magazine, he reveals: "My whole plan is to be based more in Europe, I'm trying to take that approach on different tracks. NOT content with dominating British speedway's top flight for many years, Poole have turned their attentions to the SGB Championship. After clinching back-to-back league titles with victory over Leicester in the Grand Final to maintain a 100 per cent success rate since joining in 2021, Pirates promoter Danny Ford reveals in this week's magazine: "Even at the midpoint of this year, I was thinking, 'you can't win it every year'. I was thinking things were going to be tough. We weren't in great form, and I was thinking maybe this was one of those years when we wouldn't win it. Maybe we just had to accept getting into the play-offs. But we just came into form at the right time. The team morale we have had in the last couple of seasons has been second to none. It has been incredible. Anyone who has been around the Poole team could see it. It has been an unbelievable couple of seasons. I couldn't have asked for more after moving down to the Championship."

ULRICH Ostergaard's 20-year stint as a speedway rider in Britain has come to an end – following the Dane's recent retirement announcement. At the age of 41, he will be heading back to his homeland with a lifetime of memories from a distinguished career. But there were also some lows as well as the highs, most notably the crash at Edinburgh last year which largely led to his decision to call it quits. "The only thing I can remember is lying in a hospital bed thinking, 'what have I actually done?'. I knew I could walk and do everything I wanted, but I just had to do it slowly. Obviously it was bad but not as bad as it could have been. But it was a bad one. I'm not young anymore and I am a dad and a husband. I have kept fighting. My back is not an issue when I'm riding but it was in the back of my mind. However, when I don't move it regularly I can tell that my back is not good."
