IT'S been a topsy-turvy season so far for the Thompson twins, Joe and Dan, who have been gaining and losing team places at a bewildering rate between them through no fault of their own. The pair admit it's been a difficult period for the family but they are now preferring to look forward. In this week's edition, Joe reckons: "Maybe they should look at the Championship reserves being British. I think the Rising Star places in the Premiership are perhaps a bit tough. To be honest, I was under the impression that the Rising Stars were protected and that was a rule. But obviously it's not. Obviously it's disheartening as a rider when you don't put any points on the board. If I do come last, I just want to make sure I'm in the mix or had a good race. If that's the case, there are still positives to take from it. If you are not with the pack, it's a bit concerning because it makes you think you are not ready for that stage yet."

CLIMBING the speedway ladder at a rapid rate is Australian Ben Cook, who made a name for himself in Poole's double-winning 2022 team and is now making the most of a Premiership opportunity with Peterborough. In this week's magazine, he reveals: "It's just starting to click for me. It's my third year now. It's not all new to me anymore, a bit more familiar. I've got a bit more experience and the step up to Peterborough is helping with consistent bike time this year. It helps with the progression. You've got to be on the bike to keep learning. I've learnt a lot over the past couple of years and in 2023 it's been so far, so good. Being at Poole has been amazing. It is an awesome club. They have got such a good history with winning trophies. I've been fortunate to have won every trophy my team have gone in for so far."

DREW Kemp is back in British league racing with Championship side Scunthorpe – and is keen to banish the memory of a frustrating night in the second leg of last year's Play-Off Grand Final with Poole. Having been without a team place for the opening months of this season, the Scorpions signing reveals: "I think people have prejudged me over the way I ended last year, I still see comments to this day. People just don’t understand what was happening with me at that time. No one sees what is going on behind the scenes. Last year was really frustrating for me. I wasn't fed up but when you go somewhere with a winning team but only scoring one point in a Grand Final, it's very hard. To finish the season like that, it was the last meeting of the year, was tough. No one wants to finish on a downer. I had all this built up anger. I honestly could have probably killed someone that night after that race. I was so angry. But that's what I mean about last year I was a different rider. I've matured a lot over the winter."

SOME serious injuries stunted Jordan Jenkins' early career progress and led him to him considering his future in the sport when Covid hit in 2020. But now the Norwich youngster is on the up and up again with Peterborough and Oxford and hoping to make his mark on the international scene. In this week's edition, he reveals: "I do feel I’m a very underrated rider and hope people open their eyes. I've stepped up to the plate and I think I deserve a bit more credit than I have had in previous years. I've never been selected for any Great Britain events, I have never been picked and it has been frustrating but I can’t control those decisions. I think one day, if I work as hard as I can, there will be a time I can be called upon and if that time comes I'll try my hardest to put everything into whichever event it is. I haven't had a selection so far but it is what it is and I'm not going to moan about it, that doesn't get you anywhere. I have just got to keep working, I’m only 31 now."

BELLE VUE Colts' No. 1 Jack Smith wants British promoters to re-evaluate their strategy when it comes to giving home-grown youngsters a hand up the speedway ladder. The National Leaguer says the negative effect of youngsters regularly losing their team place seriously hampers rider progress and in this week's magazine, he reveals: "I feel like riders who have been in my situation, if you stick with them for a season, towards the end of the year you will see them help the team. People don't even realise but most of the time when these changes are made, it doesn't change them winning the league or Knockout Cup. All it does is put a lot of stress on the riders. It's important to have British winners. We need to have a system that brings the British boys through stage by stage. The National League is stronger this year, which I feel is good. It does knock a rider's confidence if they get the chance and they don't score well. Then they won't be given any more chances. It needs a full revamp where you are given time."

A MYSTERY illness has derailed Erik Riss' season – and the Ipswich and Redcar racer admits he doesn't know when he will be back on track. Fearing for his immediate future, and even his long term career, the German continues to consult the medical experts and reveals: "I just started to feel foggy in the brain. I was riding and just didn't feel comfortable on the bike. I couldn't concentrate properly, I felt spaced out and got the meeting done. I didn't think much of it. I just thought it was one of those days. I get them now and again like most people. Then I was riding at Ipswich a few days later and it just got even worse. It showed in my score, I missed every start. I just didn't feel comfortable at all. After that, I felt I just can't ride like this. I flew back to Germany to get some medical advice."

FORMER World Champion Chris Holder is looking forward to shedding his neck brace and stepping up his recovery programme following the early season crash in Poland that left him with a fractured vertebra in his neck – but whether he will be racing in Britain again remains to be seen after the collapse of his proposed move to Peterborough. The Aussie has been shocked by recent developments in the Premiership and says: "I saw what happened at Wolves and it would be terrible if they went. They are one of the biggest clubs in Britain. That was a bit of a shock, so hopefully they can get sorted, and obviously Peterborough too. I don’t know what's going on behind the scenes, but we don't want to be losing any more clubs. Now the rules have changed, and it has allowed riders like Emil Sayfutdinov to come back to Britain. But they need tracks to ride on, so hopefully the clubs can sort themselves out and find somewhere to go or keep what they’ve got."

FRONT cover star Lewis Kerr is twiddling his thumbs on the sidelines for nine days after being instructed by the SCB to take time out following a suspected concussion sustained in a crash at Oxford last week. It comes at a frustrating time for Kerr, who will take a financial hit in missing five meetings, but he remains confident that his career is on the right trajectory. "I'm now 33 so I'm not a youngster anymore but I can still achieve a lot, there's no reason why I can't. I was speaking to a few other riders and they were telling me I need to get out in Poland the way I'm going. I'm in the form of my life, that's the next step. That's another aim for me. I only did one meeting out there in 2018 before I broke my legs. So I need to get out to Poland again and see what I can do."
