HERE we go again! The new Grand Prix season gets underway in Croatia this weekend and there won't be much doubt in anyone's mind as to who will start out as favourite. Poland's Bartosz Zmarzlik is the man to beat once again and in this week's magazine, Kelvin Tatum casts his expert eye over the World Champion and the 14 riders who will be trying to knock him off his perch: "Zmarzlik was so much the favourite that everybody just thought 'he's going to win it. It'll be a walk in the park'. When Dan Bewley won back-to-back GPs, he woke up and then really turned on the style. Coming into 2023, Zmarzlik has to be the man to beat. I think Zmarzlik is a better rider than Madsen. That doesn’t mean Leon can't beat him because he can. But Madsen will need to have the sort of form he showed in 2019 without any hiccups if he wants to be World Champion."

KRZYSZTOF Kasprzak put his early season problems well and truly behind him with a stunning 15-point maximum for King's Lynn in their win over Wolverhampton last week. In this week's magazine, we catch up with the Polish star, who reveals: "I think my best times were obviously winning three titles with Poole, they were great times and a big success. But what we achieved with Coventry was special as well. I hope that this season we will also have great moments with King's Lynn. I had always wanted to go back to the UK. I needed more meetings than last year. King's Lynn wanted me in their squad and we got along very well straight from the start, so I was very happy to return. I think it's a good club and we have a great team. I feel we will do everything to win meetings for our club fans and sponsors. Obviously 15 points is always fun to do!"

THE new Speedway Grand Prix series is little more than a fortnight away – and in this week's edition, we catch up with some of the protagonists at the SGP Media Day. Britain's Robert Lambert is aiming to mount a serious challenge for honours and tells us: "I think it helps that I've been racing on a bike since I was five years old. As I’ve grown up and become an adult, racing has grown up with me and I've been able to experience situations from a very early age. There have been times when I've been a bit angry. That was probably around 2017 or 2018 when things weren't going very well. I became very angry about it because I wanted to succeed. I've learnt a lot and I’ve been speaking to sport psychologists, that does have an effect. It keeps me calm and helps me let things flow in situations."

ONE man's misfortune is another man's team place... former Poole mascot Anders Rowe unexpectedly finds himself on the Pirates' team sheet as the new season gets underway, but only thanks to the unlucky Jack Thomas' crash in training at Scunthorpe last month. With Thomas recuperating and facing up to a year out of the saddle, Rowe reveals in this week's magazine: "I am good friends with Jack. We started racing together at Kent when I was 15 and we have been skiing together with Silver Ski and Len Silver. We have spent a lot of time together and it is never nice to see someone injured. You would never wish it on anyone. It's not nice, but it happens. We all get injured at some point. I hope to see Jack back on track – either racing against each other or maybe in the same team."

IN a special edition of Speedway Star this week, we take a look at the tracks that have been lost to the sport since the turn of the century – and speak to the people involved in the battles to bring some of them back to life, from Coventry to Eastbourne, from Newcastle to Rye House: "While that elephant may never disappear officialdom must make its life uncomfortable and the only way to do that is to be ahead of the game. The time to fight closures is not after a track has closed or when the bulldozers are moving in, it's as soon as there's an inkling that a stadium might be vulnerable to the pound notes on offer. Or even sooner than that. There is nothing to prevent a local authority including speedway on their Local Plan or protecting sporting heritage at any time. They don't have to jump into action reactively – it can all be done pro-actively and that is what must happen. Let's have a War Cabinet in place before the war starts..."

FRENCHMAN David Bellego will be back in British racing this year after signing for Premiership Sheffield – and will be keen to pick up where he left off with his last top flight club Swindon, with whom he won the Elite League title. In this week’s magazine, he explains the reasoning behind his return to these shores: "I'm at the stage of my career when I want to step up to more racing and I've seen my schedule for 2023 of about 80 meetings, so I'm very happy. The only reason I stopped racing in the UK was finance. When you start to ride in Poland, Sweden, England, Denmark, it's tough. I just decided to concentrate on Europe. I want to ride twice a week on different types of tracks. In Europe, we pretty much have the same types of circuits. I felt it would be good for myself to be tested on different shapes and sizes again and to improve my racing."

BRITAIN'S Premiership will boast two of the sport's biggest names this summer after Ipswich anounced the shock signing of Emil Sayfutdinov – quickly followed by Peterborough unveiling Nicki Pedersen as their latest capture. The news comes as a huge boost to the top flight as the countdown begins to the start of the 2023 season later this month. In this week's magazine, we talk to both riders, with Sayfutdinov, who was banned from racing in world speedway following the Russian invasion of Ukraine a year ago, revealing: "I wish people can understand that I didn't change my personality on February 24, 2022. I am still the same person I was on February 23. I didn't do anything wrong. I am just a sportsman. The world changed, I didn't. When the world changed on February 24, it was a hard moment and situation. I really didn’t know what to do and the entire team was in shock."
