THE waiting is over – and the 2022 Speedway Grand Prix series will get underway this weekend in Croatia. There will be no defending World Champion following the suspension of Russian Artem Laguta, but British fans will have three riders to support in Tai Woffinden, Robert Lambert and Dan Bewley. In this week's magazine, we speak to three-times World No. 1 Woffinden who still has his sights set on the record of six titles held by Ivan Mauger and Tony Rickardsson: "Crumpy said 'how can you say that?' He was shocked that I was even thinking like that. But look at it from my point of view. At that point, I had won my first – where do I go next? What motivates me to be successful? When I have won everything there is to win, where do you set that boundary? Whether I achieve it or not is a different story. But I don't mind saying it because I believe in my ability and I know what I can do."

OUR front cover star Craig Cook may have had his demons to deal with in the past, but now he's pumped and ready to go in 2022 with a new recipe for life and racing, as he tells Phil Lanning in this week's edition. "At the end of the day, this is my job, it's up to me to make some money for my family. On my day, I can be up there with some of the best in the world but getting that consistency is tough. You spend a lot of money chasing your tail. There's only so much money you can spend, you can only spend what you’ve got. I don't have that money to find that extra bit of speed. It's time for me to maybe consolidate and look after myself instead of chasing that perfection and Grand Prix racing again."

LEE Complin's racing return this year ranks as one of the most unexpected and surprise comebacks of recent times – given that the last occasion he took to the track in anger was as long ago as 2012. But the Newcastle recruit has no intention of just making up the numbers and says: "My ambitions are high. I want to get into the Premiership, there’s no limits this time. Before, I wasn't really bothered [what I achieved] but now I have got ambitions and goals..."

A STUNNING victory in Belle Vue's Peter Craven Memorial Trophy launched Michael Palm Toft's season in spectacular style last month – and now the Dane firmly believes he's going places. Dipping his toes into Polish league waters is next on his agenda as the Dane reveals in this week's issue: "I feel like I have got better every year as I have got more mature and that comes from being a father. My little boy Cody is six now and when you become a father you grow up all of a sudden, you have got more responsibility and I think it's changed me for the better. I wasn't the most mature rider when I was in the Under-21s but I think becoming a dad definitely changed something in me when Cody was born in 2016."

SPEEDWAY'S very own 'Bionic Man' Adam Roynon will be hoping for an accident-free 2022 when he dons a Redcar body colour for the new season. Avoiding the air-fence and hospitals will be high on the ever-enthusiastic Cumbrian’s wishlist after a career that, so far, has been plagued by misfortune and, often serious, injuries. In this week's magazine, Adam tells us: "I got there or thereabouts (last season) and now it's a matter of doing it well consistently, whether it's off gate one, two or three, and I'm getting close to where I want to be. I’m happy with what I did last year but still not satisfied, if that makes any sense? The standard has changed massively – it's greatly improved. Everything is getting faster and better as man improves to go further and push on. Whereas the gap between the No. 1 and the No. 7 used to be big, their pace is not much different now during a race."

FAST motors have always been a critical component of a speedway rider's armoury, but more so than ever nowadays. So says Britain’s three-times World Champion Tai Woffinden as he prepares to launch an assault on title No. 4 in 2022: "It all depends on how my engines are. Unfortunately that's the way of the Championship now. People are surprised when I say it. I'm always asked what do I need to win the title: I just say a good engine. Every year it becomes more and more about machinery. We are all riding at a level when we can beat each other. We all train hard, work hard and put in the hours with testing. A lot of the time with regard to the engines, it can be a bit of a lottery."

WE are living in frightening times – and former King's Lynn rider Nicklas Porsing has found himself in the thick of the Ukraine crisis. Married to a Ukrainian and living in Poland close to the border, he has been doing what he can to help the refugees desperately fleeing the Russian army. In an emotional interview with Peter Oakes in this week's edition, he reveals: "You see the mothers in absolute tears coming through, their husbands have driven them to the other side of the border and had to say goodbye and turn around and go back. They don't know what to do. You can see the mothers asking 'where do I go? What do we do?'. They probably don't have any relations in the western part of Europe. It’s a horrible sight."

In this week's edition, the Ipswich and Leicester prospect reveals: "I really want to make my mark in Poland. I've signed for a great team and they have one of the best riders in the world in Bartosz. At the end of last year, I went to Gorzow to sign my contract. It was such a nice place to be. I've met everyone at the club, the engine tuners, team managers and riders. It's been made clear to me that Bartosz is very keen on helping the younger riders, which is massive for me."
