ROBERT Lambert's Grand Prix place is in jeopardy as the series heads into its penultimate round in Wroclaw on Saturday. The Brit, second in the world to Bartosz Zmarzlik in 2024, has endured a frustrating season but remains very much in contention for a top seven finish which would stamp his ticket into the 2026 championship. In this week's magazine, he explains some of his problems: "It's a bit to do with that (the new race format), but also I've been struggling a little bit this season with getting things rolling as well as they were last year. We have been trying lots of different things to go back to basics. We started with the same set-up we finished with last year and we invested a lot in new equipment. It hasn’t quite worked and clicked but I can't really put my finger on why. I could have done the qualifiers but after such a great season last year, I had confidence in myself and believed I could make the top seven. That’s still the goal and I believe I can do it."

THE end is nigh for Birmingham, who stage their final meeting at Perry Barr on Bank Holiday Monday. It will be an emotional occasion for all connected with the Brummies, fans, riders and officials alike, but none more so than promoter Nigel Tolley, who has put his heart and soul – not to mention a considerable amount of money – into keeping the club afloat during four years in charge. In a special six-page feature this week, his enthusiasm for the sport remains undiminished: "I don't regret taking over at all, not the slightest bit, but maybe I ought to! There are obviously other opportunities out there and it might be a case of having 12 months off first, or there might be an opportunity come along that I would take. My wife Jo wants me to have at least 12 months off and said if I want to go into something next season, I would find her filing divorce papers the next day – but I think it was in jest!"

BERWICK'S Danyon Hume has no thoughts of quitting speedway, despite the crash at Shielfield Park this summer which left him with two broken vertebrae. In this week's magazine, he confirms his plans to return to the track in 2026 and also recalls the accident: "Jonatan (Grahn) hit the fence and his bike came flying across in front of me. I was on the straight and there was nothing I could do. I didn't even have a chance to shut the throttle off. His bike just appeared in front of me and I hit it. I went straight over the handlebars and then my bike landed on my back. Straight away, I knew I had broken my back. I landed on the centre green. I had hit his bike flat-out and that's why I think I travelled so far because of the speed involved. The minute I tried to lift my head up, that's when I knew I'd done something serious."

THE World Championship race is heading for a thrilling conclusion after Brady Kurtz completed a hat-trick of victories in Latvia last weekend. The Australian moved to within three points of series leader Bartosz Zmarzlik with only two rounds to go as his astonishing debut season in the GP continued. In this week's magazine, Kurtz reveals: "Three in a row is pretty crazy really. It was a tough night. It started off terribly, but we got the bike working and I started making really good starts, which was super important. I made two good starts at the end. They've only had two GPs there, so there's not a lot to watch about this track. It's not like they race league matches there or anything like that. It was kind of tough to know what to expect. All you could do is watch the previous year's GP and that was super rough and quite nasty. There wasn't much I could go off. I could only turn up for practice and hope for the best. Given the level we all ride at, going to a new track isn't really that big a deal. They all go left. It might have caught me off-guard in the first race, but I think we got it sorted after that."

JASON Edwards may have just landed himself a new team place in the Premiership with Ipswich, but he's a firm believer in both rider and club loyalty. In this week's magazine, the Redcar star claims: "I still think in all sports you should associate someone with a club, and it's not only team sports. When I think of Valentino Rossi, I think of Yamaha; when I think of Marc Marquez, I think of Repsol Honda. You associate riders with different brands. You think of Dan Bewley, he's Belle Vue. You can't see him racing for Sheffield, it wouldn't be right. One of the things that still annoys me about our sport is trying to explain to the normal person by saying: 'He rode here last year, he was in Glasgow the year before and now he’s in Plymouth?' It doesn't make any sense."

FORTY-SOMETHING Scott Nicholls is back in British league racing with Championship Plymouth – and he believes he still has a couple of years left in him to continue racing competitively. After making his Gladiators debut last weekend, he reveals in this week's magazine: "When you get older, you start to appreciate things more. There are a few reality checks in life. I've had to remind myself on more than one occasion why I started riding speedway in the first place. So easily it becomes a job. Then you are just chasing the pound signs. When I was a kid you were happy with a plastic trophy. I just wanted to race my bike. I think I can still do a half decent job and I enjoy it. I’m in a fortunate position that I can do something I've done as a kid and still get paid for it. Whether you think you get paid enough or not is irrelevant. There will be one day when I say I don't want to race anymore. I think I'll be 85 before I say 'I don't want to ride a motorbike’!"

BREAKING vertebrae in a bad crash in Poland last month brought Luke Becker's season to a shuddering halt – just when he was enjoying a purple patch of form. But Leicester's American star is well on the road to recovery and hasn't even dismissed the possibility of making a shock track return before this season is out. In this week's magazine, he reveals: "I had my best results and was the highest in the averages I've ever been. Things were definitely clicking, which makes it that much more frustrating. But at the same time I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. So hopefully we can take all the negatives and make it a bit of a positive. Things were definitely going good, which makes it sting a bit more. I'm just trying to keep positive and come back as strong as possible."

THERE will be British interest in the European Championship which gets underway in Bydgoszcz, Poland, this weekend – with Ipswich star Tom Brennan going to the tapes as one of the series' wild cards. In this week's magazine, he admits: "Getting into the SEC has been a target of mine for the last five years really, so it’s something that's been coming! I've been in every single qualifier to try and prepare for it and every single opportunity I've had, I've tried to take it. Those qualifiers can be a headache sometimes because you can be riding really well and everything feels good, and then one small mishap or mistake, which sometimes is out of your control, impacts that massively. Qualifiers can be a headache for everybody but I'm fortunate enough to have got the wild card and I'm obviously grateful for that. Now I have to try and move forward."

IT'S time for change. So says recent Birmingham recruit Ben Barker, a rider who has seen plenty in his two decades of service to British speedway. The Plymouth heat leader is an early advocate of a switch to one league in 2026 and in this week's magazine, he reveals: "My current gut feeling is that we need to make big changes to protect the future. I'm hearing that certain clubs won't ride in the Premiership next year and that tells me that it’s time to go one league with less riders, give everyone more meetings and see where it goes. The bottom line is that we've got to worry about British speedway – that’s what needs saving. We don't need to worry about any other leagues – our sole concern needs to be making sure that British team speedway survives."
