MICHAEL Palm Toft will be looking to put an injury-troubled couple of seasons well and truly behind him as he prepares to grab the headlines for all the right reasons in 2024. An early season spat with Lewis Kerr at Sheffield was a notable part of a curtailed campaign in 2023: "Lewi and I got a bit of publicity for that incident. We can laugh about it now and shake our heads. We shook hands. It is what it is. In speedway, things are going to happen no matter what. We need controversy and I hate the term 'family sport'. It's not a good term when it costs 20-plus quid to get in per adult. At the end of the day, it's a motorsport, it's dangerous. Accidents are going to happen and people are going to butt heads. Let's thrive on those moments. When speedway is promoted on TV it's all fight clips they show, like the Scott Nicholls and Emil Sayfutdinov clash at Cardiff, or Nicki Pedersen kicking somebody. That's all they use, so why would you want to ban that?"

NASTY injuries at the wrong time have hampered Steve Worrall's career but with new challenges to face up to in Britain at Birmingham and Glasgow, he still harbours lofty ambitions – and is aiming for the top. In this week's magazine, he tells us: "I wouldn't still be racing unless I thought I could take an extra step and go up a level. With speedway, you get to a certain age and you realise it's not a hobby anymore. At some point, you have to grow up, you have a family to support and you want to progress in life and go as far as I can. I have to knuckle down and I still feel like I've got a lot to give while I'm out on track. The goals are the same as they've always been. It's about trying to get to the top. The hunger is still there."

TWENTY-THREE years after he first burst onto the British scene, Hans Andersen is calling it a day. The Danish star, a former Grand Prix winner amongst many honours, won't be going to the tapes anywhere in the world this year and in this week's magazine, he reveals to Peter Oakes one of the primary reasons why. "I wake up every day and don't feel any aches or pains, I don't have any problems from any speedway injury – and I don't want that to happen. I would be bitter for the rest of my life if I carried on and were to pick up an injury that I had to suffer from for the rest of my life. Being able to wake up the way I do means so much to me. I look at many of my younger rivals who are suffering from some kind of speedway injuries. It's not that I am afraid of racing and getting hurt, it's just that you get injured more and more badly the older you get and looking at my birth certificate, I'm not that young any more!"

NICE guy Jaimon Lidsey took out the FIM Oceania title in Australia last weekend – and he's now setting himself some lofty goals as the 2024 season beckons. In this week's magazine, the Belle Vue Ace reveals: "I like being under the radar, I don't need the spotlight. I like just going along and chipping away and maybe surprising people, you could say. I concentrate on my own goals and what I should be doing. I’m probably too nice. If I win races, then great; if I lose, then the person who beat me was better, simple as that. That's just the way I've been brought up, I'm just not a sore loser. Of course, when you get to the Grand Prix, you have to step it up because you are racing for a World Championship. It's not aggressive in any way. It's probably more about being mentally strong in the big moment."

A MOVE to Ipswich could be just what Adam Ellis needs to kickstart his British career again after a troubled spell with Sheffield last year. The Brit is setting his sights high and in this week's magazine, he reveals: "I've got a really good relationship with Chris Louis and Richie Hawkins. Guys like Doyley and Emil Sayfutdinov, you don't get to ride with those guys every week on a normal basis. It's a chance to go back there with a fresh start. I am trying to surround myself with good people to help me take the next step. I am the way I am. I am laidback, I try not to think too much on the meeting ahead when I get to the track. I want to get to the next step and race in the Grand Prix series and be in the top league in Poland. I want to do it for myself, not to shut people up. I don't really care what people have to say or think."

ROHAN Tungate has been crowned Australian Champion after a dramatic final round in Gillman. The new Oxford signing overturned a five-point pre-meeting deficit on favourite Max Fricke in the decider to clinch his second Aussie title. After the meeting, Tungate spoke to Speedway Star for this week's edition and revealed: "I am so happy to be Australian Champion. I have proved that I can run with these guys again. I would love to give Speedway GP a go. It's always tough to go to the qualifiers but this year I can pick where I want to race. I didn't think about whether I could possibly be champion. I just dealt with the cards I had and took every race as it came. I knew it wasn’t always about what I did; it was about what Max did as well. I just had to keep putting points on the board. Throughout the whole series, I just focused on picking up as many points as possible and making the finals."

EXCITING-TO-WATCH Ben Basso has had Nicki Pedersen pointing him in the right direction – and will be looking to capitalise on the Denmark team manager's words of wisdom in 2024. Targeting the GP and SEC qualifiers, he reveals in this week’s edition: "It's about time I got myself onto the big stages, that would be a big achievement for me. The time is now. We only live once and I want to make the most out of my life and my career. It also takes common sense. I know that I'm not going to be World Champion this season and that it takes time and experience. I have been watching a lot of Polish speedway this winter to get myself in the right mindset. How they go into the corners, when to turn, when to cut back. Grand Prix riders are all about keeping their wheels in line. That's the direction you need to go. I feel like in speedway I just want consistency at a high level."

THE Australian Championship is starting Down Under – and that represents a big target for Ryan Douglas, a rider who ended the 2023 British season as the top man in the second tier with Scunthorpe and an emerging Premiership performer with Wolverhampton. Ahead of a fresh start with Leicester next season, Douglas reveals: "Last year was a good year, so I am confident in my riding at the minute. But there are a lot of good riders in Australia, so it's not going to be easy. We will just take it round by round. If all goes well and I can ride how I know I can, I am sure I can mix it at the top. Before this year, I had never really looked at it too much. But now I am starting to get to the point where it is a goal of mine to make the GP qualifiers in the next couple of years, have a go and see what happens. Getting in the top four in the Australian Championship would be unreal."
