REDCAR supporters can look forward to welcoming an old favourite back to Teesside next spring – and German ace Erik Riss is delighted to be donning Bears' colours once again. In this week's Speedway Star, he tells us: "Being at Redcar is special – it's a good race track and always well prepared which, for a rider, is usually the first thing you think about. Some riders go for the money but I always care more about enjoying my racing and I can do that at Redcar. But the whole club is special – the supporters are always so supportive. I've never heard any negative stuff from the fans there and you do get that at some clubs. The whole package makes it the place to be."

HOT British prospect Jordan Palin may have been thrown in at the deep end last season, but any fears that he might sink without a trace were quickly dispelled in what turned out to be a memorable year for the youngster with the title-winning Peterborough team, as well as second tier Scunthorpe. In this week's issue, he reveals: "It was a big jump for me to go into the Premiership. Not only did some say that the team was maybe too old but also that I might have been too young for the top division. I had to just keep a clear mind. But I was lucky to have such calm team-mates around me so whether I scored well or not, no one was putting any pressure on me."

HE'S back! The 2017 World Champion Jason Doyle is returning to British racing after agreeing a 2022 contract with Premiership Ipswich. The Aussie reveals the thinking behind his decision in this week's edition: "It's easier for me this way. I don't have to travel to Sweden from Poland and then spend all day Tuesday at the track waiting to race. You have to leave Poland on Monday and head to Sweden, this way I can fly home and spend time back in the UK. I think more riders will look at it and realise this. I've seen guys like Max Fricke and Tobiasz Musielak talking about coming back here and I think there will be others over the next few seasons, which is great for UK speedway."

JAMES Sarjeant's 2021 campaign ended in painful and spectacular fashion at Edinburgh last month in what was widely seen as one of the worst crashes of the season. Now recovering from his injuries, the Redcar racer recalls: "The bike straightened up and took off and I was heading straight for the fence. You don't get much time to think about if you can do anything – you are just a passenger when that happens. I was heading towards where Richie Worrall was standing by the Grant Henderson banner and I just remember the look on his face as I was heading towards him!"

EDWARD Kennett was on the verge of retiring after a traumatic season with Eastbourne that ended early with the Eagles' closure, but now he’s looking forward to a new lease of life at Plymouth. "With all these clubs local to me closing, I will have to travel. I'll have to take that on the chin and do it. Plymouth is my new club and that's probably five hours from me. I did hint to Mark Phillips that I would be available for next year when I get my helicopter delivered in March!"

POOLE and Glasgow have brought the curtain down on the 2021 British season – and it's the Pirates who are celebrating after completing a league and cup double with victory in the Championship Grand Final. Don't miss this week's edition for all the reaction, including Pirates' heat leader Steve Worrall: "I don’t like to go into meetings over-confident. But in my mind, when I looked up and down the line-up and matched up each rider from our team and Glasgow's team, I just felt we had a little bit more than them. It's nice to go into a meeting with that feeling."

PREMIERSHIP champions Peterborough feature on this week's front cover – and inside, Panthers team manager Rob Lyon looks back on a memorable campaign for the club that culminated in their thrilling Grand Final victory over Belle Vue: "I can’t remember how Dad's Army started. I think we were dubbed it by someone and it developed over a period of time. The guys used it to their advantage. Scott kept saying, 'we're not bad for a bunch of old ones'. We took it as a motivating tool and we often spoke about it. I'm not sure if they all knew what Dad's Army was. Jordan, bless him, didn’t because he wasn’t born when it was on the go!"
