CRAIG Cook returned to track action in Berwick colours last weekend, only a matter of weeks after his withdrawal from Leicester's Premiership side sparked plenty of social media speculation about the Cumbrian's future. In his first interview since then, the former British Champion and GP racer reveals: "I got diagnosed with ADHD three years ago, so I was still trying to get the medication right....it wasn't fair for me to go and race for Leicester. I haven't explained anything, not been on Facebook or any sort of media. I haven't read anything. It's frustrating, because it doesn't matter what I say, I'm always going to get criticised for whatever. I just kept myself to myself, worked on my health and then tried to get myself ready to race. At the end of the day, I'm not going to go and race and make a fool of myself or worse, injure someone. It wasn't fair on me or anyone else to go racing, the fans, or the opponents…anyone. I just made the decision, which wasn't an easy decision, but it was the right one."

LEON Madsen admits he was "shocked" to lose his Grand Prix place after being overlooked for a seeded wild card berth following a troubled 2024 in his personal life away from the track. But now he's targeting a swift return to the World Championship chase, as he reveals in this week’s magazine: "I had a rough season last year but everyone knows why. That was the first year when I have struggled, so to not get handed a wild card was a massive disappointment. You could feel it was a lack of understanding from the people of why I was performing like I did in the GP last year. I want to get back in as fast as possible. I don't want to sit out for a few years. My age is also catching up on me. I am 36 now – 37 at the end of the year. I want to get back in there. It was not fun to get the message that I wouldn't be part of it this year but I have kind of accepted it now."

A HECTIC opening weekend of the Cab Direct Championship season yielded trophies for Redcar and Glasgow – as Bears successfully defended their Pairs crown at Workington on Saturday before the action shifted across country to Scunthorpe the following afternoon for the Riders' Championship, won by Tigers' No. 1 Chris Harris. We have full coverage of both meetings in this week's magazine, including reaction from Redcar's Erik Riss to a drama-laden final against Poole, which resulted in the German crashing with Pirates' Lewis Kerr: "I'm feeling pretty second-hand now. The adrenaline is going and I'm starting to feel it. It's a shame it ended that way. You don't want to finish a big meeting like this. It was a racing incident, it wasn't anyone's fault. If anything, it was the track's fault. It was a bit greasy going in there. I think if there was more drive when we came together, it wouldn't have happened."

EMIL Sayfutdinov remains in the World Championship wilderness through no fault of his own thanks to Russia's invasion of Ukraine three years ago – but has not given up on his dream of one day returning to the Grand Prix series. In this week's magazine, the Ipswich star admits that his enforced absence has been tough to take: "I do think that I may have missed out on the World Championship win during the times I have not been in the Grand Prix. There have been lots of times when I have missed opportunities and not used that moment. But mainly I don't think about that. I don't look back, only forward. That's life. Sometimes you have to accept that it's been a tough time. Now it's always about changing the future and being strong. Right now I only look to see what I can do and make the most of my opportunities."

IT'S that time of year again! Spring has almost sprung and the tapes have gone up on the new speedway season. So who's hot and who's not in 2025? We attempt to find out in our annual preview edition, with the assistance of a few insiders with expert knowledge. Great Britain's joint team manager Olly Allen assesses the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership: "Mark Lemon has built a powerful team again but whether Belle Vue are strong enough to win the league, I'm not sure. I definitely think they will make the plays-offs and they are strong at home. Brady Kurtz is hard to beat there but when I look at their top five, it doesn’t look as good as Ipswich's. For me, Ipswich are the favourites. I look at the team and think, 'how the hell have you fitted all of them in?' And whenever you say that about a team, you know it's fairly strong to say the least!"

RYAN Douglas is thankful for a number of people who kept his career on track as he prepares to celebrate his testimonial at Leicester this Saturday – and none more so than Darcy Ward. It was the Australian star who convinced Douglas to keep going when he had to sit out the 2018 British season after failing to secure a visa and in this week's edition, Ryan reveals: "During that time, I got speaking to Darcy a fair bit and he kind of swayed me to keep riding back home when I could. And from there I started to fall in love with it all again. I learnt a lot from Darcy that year; he told me what I could be better at, he showed me ways to go about improving certain aspects and he got me to think about things a lot more like a speedway rider probably should. I'm just so grateful to have such a great bloke I can turn to and I'm very lucky to have someone with his talent as my best mate as well. But as he says to me sometimes, he can tell me as many things as he wants to, it's me who’s got to take it on board and go out there and do it at 70mph – and it's not always that easy! I've always made the most of his support and it's great to see him still very much involved in the sport in Australia."

THE tapes go up on a new speedway season this weekend – and it's Danish star Niels-Kristian Iversen who gets things underway with his Testimonial meeting at King's Lynn on Sunday, closely followed by Belle Vue's Peter Craven Memorial on Monday. In this week's magazine, Iversen looks ahead to his special day in Norfolk, which will see some big clubs from the past resurrected as Lynn take on Newport, Peterborough and Wolverhampton. NKI reveals: "A few of the clubs I have ridden for in the past currently do not have a track and that's pretty sad. I thought it would be a good idea to bring the clubs back at least for a day. Hopefully it will bring back the names and some of the fans who support them. The line-up looks pretty good. It's nice that the boys want to do it and we should be in for a good afternoon. Let's hope for some good weather and then everything will be perfect."

ANDERS Rowe will be wearing the colours of Premiership Sheffield and Championship Poole in Britain this year – but he also has designs on furthering his career internationally with a team place in Poland's Under-24 Ekstraliga. The young Brit had his appetite whetted after signing for Torun last year and in this week's magazine he reveals: "It's what every rider strives for – being in that Polish Ekstraliga. It felt really good and was a lot of fun to be around riders like Emil Sayfutdinov, Robert Lambert and Patryk Dudek. Having them in your corner and in your team and being able to ask questions on practice days is awesome. It has been a big foot in the door. It helps that you go to the Ekstraliga tracks and gaining that knowledge for the future is brilliant. You can learn the track set-ups and the way they ride. Getting to know people out there and establishing yourself there helps a lot. It has been a massive thing to have in my career."

LEICESTER'S Max Fricke is working his way back to full fitness after a winter crash in Australia, which wrecked his bid for a fourth national title and left him nursing a knee injury. But now he's all but fit and raring to go for the start of the new season and a return to the full-time Speedway Grand Prix fold. The Lions' No. 1 will be one of four Aussies in the 2025 SGP field and in this week’s magazine he reveals: "It's great for Australian speedway. Hopefully we will get a bit of support from back home and can create some interest. In general, we have quite a strong nation. It's really cool to see Jack, Brady and I all in there. We're all the same age, having grown up together from junior racing. We’ve been racing together since we were nine or 10 years old. It's really cool to see the progression over the years and how we have all made steps forward throughout our careers to make it to the pinnacle of the sport – the GPs."
