PULLING on the famous skull and crossbones colours has triggered the best spell of Richard Lawson's career, which began back in the old Conference League in 2008. Sixteen years down the line, the Poole favourite is preparing for his testimonial at Wimborne Road this Sunday, while hoping for plenty more good years to come. In this week's magazine, he reveals: "When you have that badge on your chest, there’s a lot of history there. I can't explain the vibe. The club just breathes success and it rubs off on you. I'm riding the best I ever have and I think a lot of that is to do with being at this club."

BRITISH speedway fans have never had it so good...not for a long time anyway! First, a Speedway of Nations triumph, now a home one-two in the Grand Prix at Cardiff in this most memorable of summers through Dan Bewley and Robert Lambert. In this week's magazine, we have extensive coverage from the Principality Stadium, with Bewley revealing: "It's tough but now everything is good. I'm just enjoying riding again. I've finally got to a point where I am comfortable on the bikes again and everything is coming along. I have been good for a month or two now. People say it has to be this way or that way to be successful but if I'm enjoying it, it's not hard at all. You just turn up, have a good time and it really doesn't take a lot of effort when you are having a good time. This makes everything that bit easier. I feel like when you are comfy and enjoying it, there is no hard work."

THE highlight of the domestic season is just days away, with the cream of world speedway heading to Cardiff's Principality Stadium this weekend for the annual British Grand Prix on Saturday evening. In this week's magazine, we look ahead to the big night in the company of a man who knows a thing or two about winning in Wales...four-times World Champion Greg Hancock. "The big winner on the night in Cardiff is the sport itself. It has never just been about a particular rider. The fans pretty much cheer for everybody. That's what makes it special. It's not like being in Warsaw, where there is a heck of a lot more support for the Polish riders only. That's just the nature of the beast in Poland – they are very houseproud. The British league is way more diverse when it comes to overall support."

GREAT Britain supremos Rob Painter and Vicky Blackwell have transformed the fortunes of the national team since taking charge seven years ago – so much so that the Lions are now the most successful nation in tat period. In this week's magazine, Painter reveals the inside story: "Jeremy (Holt, performance psychologist) talks about becoming the most dominant national team in world speedway. That is something that gets said to every rider that races for Great Britain. I remember at the very beginning and thinking that is the goal. What is it going to take to get us there? And here we are right now in 2024 and Great Britain are the No. 1 most successful national team in that period of time, from 2018 until now. It is remarkable really, considering we started from scratch in early 2018. Not only that, we were possibly starting 10 or 15 years behind Poland and Denmark."

LATVIAN star Andzejs Lebedevs has been basking in his status as a Grand Prix rider – and is looking forward to more of the same next summer, even though he is facing a major challenge to secure a top six automatic qualification spot for 2025. A separate route into next year's series remains open via the European Championship, in which he is currently joint leader, and in this week's magazine Lebedevs reveals: "I enjoy every round. I enjoy being part of this game and I enjoy feeling like I am one of the best riders in the world. I am not stressed before GPs. I just look around me and say to myself, 'Ah, you're here and you're good. Just enjoy it'. I am very happy before every round of the SGP series. I have said to my team, my mechanics and everyone else that we have many chances to stay in Speedway GP for next year. That is the goal for 100 per cent. I don't want to miss next season in Speedway GP. I want to remain a full-time SGP rider."

THE race to reach the Premiership and Championship plays-offs is hotting up and various factors will determine who finishes in the top four – injuries, new signings, etc. Oxford have been quick to ring the changes but one constant for them in both of their senior and second-tier teams has been exciting 16-year-old discovery Ashton Boughen. In this week's magazine the former motocrosser explains his rapid development and why he hopes his Oxford education will soon also help him graduate to competitive racing in mainland Europe. "I was the only rider to beat the Poles," he said, looking back on his recent European Under-19 Pairs experience. "I showed what I could do and I think the next step is to go out to other countries and start racing." In Poland's Under-24 Ekstraliga, maybe? "That is something we’re going to look at doing next year," Boughen said.

GREAT Britain have regained the Speedway of Nations crown following a momentous Final at the National Speedway Stadium. Home heroes Robert Lambert and Dan Bewley overpowered Australia in the deciding race to add another SoN gold to their previous success at the same Manchester venue. In this week's magazine, we have comprehensive coverage of Nations week, with Lambert revealing: "I had a bit of a doubt in the back of my mind after the British Final didn't go well. I made a bit of a fool of myself at that meeting. The engine I thought would be great around here wasn't. It wasn't me as a rider lacking anything. It was just the baby under me. But we did some testing. We got a new engine and I had a great meeting on the Sunday before the Final in Torun. I knew that was 100 per cent the engine I was bringing here."

IT'S quite a weekend for speedway in Britain. Not only is there the Speedway of Nations final in Manchester on Saturday, but also a big event on Sunday too with Championship Workington hosting the Ben Fund Bonanza. In this week's magazine, we talk to King's Lynn's Grand Prix star Jan Kvech, one of the big names who will be heading to Cumbria to help swell the Ben Fund coffers. "From the start of my career, my dream was to be in the Grand Prix. Now I am there, I want to stay there. One day, I want to be World Champion. If not, I want to stay in the Grand Prix and if not (next year) I will want to come back stronger. The first season is always hard because the riders have had more time on these tracks, they have good set-ups. For me, this season is more about learning and if I do not stay there, I want to come back and come back stronger. Hopefully I get more experience this season that will help me for the years in the future."

THE countdown is on to one of the highlights of the season with the Speedway of Nations tournament set to go under starter's orders at Belle Vue on Tuesday. British hopes took a knock when Tai Woffinden was injured in the Gorzow Grand Prix but the host nation still have Dan Bewley and Robert Lambert to lead their charge – and are, of course, seeded straight to the final. In this week's magazine, four-times World Champion Greg Hancock looks ahead to the tournament and he leans towards Australia as potential winners: "Right now, Australia look like the form team. Max Fricke is just building momentum since he got the opportunity to come back to the GP. He’s been up and down for a while but he’s back on form. There’s been a bit of talk about whether they use Brady Kurtz or Jaimon Lidsey as well. They are very good whichever way they go. Jack is going great everywhere, he’s hard to stop. They have got to be favourites along with Poland and GB. It’s going to be interesting to watch."
