SPEEDWAY is in mourning following the death of top referee Tony Steele.
His passing, at the age of 68, was announced on Tuesday morning. In a statement, the ACU, SCB and BSPL said they ‘are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend and colleague Tony Steele. Tony is best known for being a long-standing FIM Grand Prix and SCB speedway referee where for many years he was a familiar figure. ‘As a senior FIM Track Racing Commission member, ACU Vice President, Chairman of the Track Racing Commission and Bureau member of the Speedway Control Bureau, Tony worked tirelessly behind the scenes as a much-respected member of the ACU, SCB and FIM Track Racing family. ‘His contribution and loss to the sport he loved is immeasurable. We would like to offer our sincere condolences to Tony’s family and friends at this very sad and difficult time.’
