REDCAR duo Charles Wright and Lewis Kerr lifted the Championship Pairs trophy for the Bears at Oxford on Friday night.
It was the first time the Teesside outfit had tasted success in the competition since the club's previous incarnation as Middlesbrough when Mark Courtney and Steve Wilcock were triumphant at Halifax in 1980. Wright and Kerr defeated the Poole pairing of Danny King and Steve Worrall in the final, although they faced no real challenge after Worrall's machine failed on the start-line as the tapes rose. Earlier, the Bears defeated Glasgow in the semi-finals, with Poole getting the better of Leicester. Redcar co-promoter Jamie Swales said: "To win any national silverware is a proud moment but what a way to do it, they both were on it all night and they were the best performers on the night. "Poole and Leicester rode really well, but I would have backed our guys over any of them. "Out of all of the teams, our boys had the best team-riding and that was what it's all about."
