BRITISH speedway has been rocked by tragedy with the sudden death of British Finalist Danny Ayres. After a dark week for the sport, the Star's Phil Lanning pays tribute to his popular friend in this week's edition: "The pits always lit up when he walked into it. The lanky buffoon would stride in, EastEnders-type accent echoing around the place, wearing a pair of Aviator sunglasses he got free with a tank of fuel, shorts and t-shirt that had never even had the hint of seeing an iron, odd socks and manky slip-ons that had walked many a ploughed field. But he always greeted you with a massive bear hug."
