FREDRIK Lindgren moved up to fourth place in the World Championship standings with victory in the Polish Grand Prix in Gorzow on Saturday night.
But the meeting was marred by a bad crash for Britain’s Tai Woffinden, who sustained a broken left elbow in Heat 8 and underwent surgery on Sunday. He will now miss the forthcoming Speedway of Nations in Manchester. Series leader Bartosz Zmarzlik looked set to win the meeting when he led the final but was passed by Lindgren at the start of the last lap. Zmarzlik had the consolation of extending his lead in the World Championship to 27 points, while Danes Mikkel Michelsen and Leon Madsen were third and fourth. Lindgren said: “Obviously I feel great to finally be back on the top step of the podium as a Speedway GP winner again. That feels absolutely amazing. “This was a rollercoaster of a day. I was 15th – second to last – in qualification. We were scratching our heads a bit. Then I started Heat 1 on an overwatered track. I was filled in with a lot of dirt and water. I was riding blind for most of that heat. “I just kept fighting all the way through the first couple of heats. But I felt I had good speed in my bike and I was making good decisions. I am happy I was able to pull it off in the final.” • Full coverage from Gorzow in Speedway Star this week – on sale on Thursday.
