BARTOSZ Zmarzlik has moved 17 points clear in the World Championship standings – after breaking the record for most Grand Prix wins in Malilla on Saturday night.
In a meeting delayed by almost two hours because of heavy rain, the Polish star defied the wet conditions as well as his 15 rivals to post the 24th SGP victory of his career, breaking the record of 23 set by Jason Crump in 2012. Zmarzlik passed Max Fricke in the Final at the Skrotfrag Arena, with Britain’s Robert Lambert claiming third place on the rostrum ahead of Jack Holder. The result moved Lambert up to second overall, but well behind the seemingly unstoppable Zmarzlik, who has qualified for the Final in every round so far this season and is already closing in on his fifth world title. Zmarzlik said afterwards: “After the rain came, the first plan maybe had to change, and I had to think again. I was stressing really badly. I had a really bad start. I was slow. But after, I had many talks with my team, and we got the set-up in a good way. I felt stronger and stronger with every heat.” • Don’t miss this week’s Speedway Star for full coverage of the Malilla weekend, including the SGP2 and SGP4.
